This 1976 National Public Radio (NPR) documentary addresses the overall history of Montana and discusses specifically: the Lewis and Clark expedition; gold mining; the cattle industry; homesteading; the copper-mining and coal-mining industries; the Progressive movement; native-white warfare; the writing of the second Montana constitution in the early 1970s; and the struggle to protect the state's environment and lifestyle. This segment is narrated by Roger Johnson as part of NPR's Bicentennial series entitled "The States of the Union."

Born in Louisiana, blues guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland (1937-1997) was raised in Houston, Texas, where he formed the band Dukes of Rhythm. Although he recorded albums and performed with Sonny Boy Williamson and Bib Mama Thornton in Texas, Copeland only received recognition after moving to New York City in 1975.
